To All SMHA Members
On Sunday May 28 I was very honored to accept the VIAHA ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR 2016-17 award on behalf of SMHA.
I want to thank the entire 2016 -17 Executive, some of which are no longer on the Board, for all their work and input into improving SMHA. I would also, like to thank the coaches, managers, and safety personnel for all their volunteer hours. Most of all though, the players and parents, who are the reason we do what we do.
Also, our friends and partners in the Rep Hockey Coop Project at Victoria Minor Hockey Association (VMHA) and their Board, who have played an important role in Saanich being given this award. VMHA Past President Chris Atchison has been an wealth of knowledge and a huge help to me personally. Al Walker, SMHA former President who saw the big picture, and laid the foundation for the development of the Coop program.
This award is a great honour for our association, and we will proudly be hanging the banner at Pearkes Arena in the near future
To: All Saanich Minor Hockey Association Members:
The SMHA Board (Board) initiated a Governance Project (Project) in April of this year in light of the new Societies Act (Act) coming into force in November 2016. Every registered society, such as the Saanich Minor Hockey Association (Association), will be required to have new bylaws that comply with the Act by November 2018.
While the deadline for compliance is some time away, the Board struck a three-person Governance Committee (Committee) to review the SMHA’s current governance framework; and, based on its findings develop a plan to begin modernizing the administrative and operational practices of the Association.
To that end, the Committee is well along in revising and/or drafting the following: a Societies Act-compliant Constitution and Bylaws; Policies; Procedures; Standing Committees Terms of Reference; Codes of Conduct/Contracts; Service Agreements; Job Descriptions; and, a number of additional resources (e.g. Team Manager’s Manual) for members, team officials and Board members.SMHA Governance Project
The revised Player Code of Conduct Contract, Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct Contract, Player Code of Conduct, Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct and Zero Tolerance Policy were the first of these new materials to be approved by the Board; they are now in effect and available on the SMHA website.
In the coming weeks, several more documents will be approved by the Board and will also come into effect; however, it will likely be some time before all of the documents are completed and in place. The Committee will strive to keep members as well informed as possible along the way.
Your ongoing patience is very much appreciated as the Board moves forward on this significant and important undertaking.
Michael Marson, Chair
On behalf of the SMHA Governance Committee
